God didnot create a devil, but a beautiful, perfect superangel. But Almighty God did give to his angels free moral agency-minds that were free to think and reason-the right of free choice. Lucifer had allowed his beauty and perfection to fill him with vanity, self-glory, self-desire.

Never was there a more important choice than the one our first parents, Adam and Eve, made in the Garden of Eden. God had given them His instructions, then allowed them to choose between right and wrong. Mankind must not only choose what is right, but must also actively reject what is wrong (Deuteronomy 30:19).

Adam and Eve’s choice was influenced by Satan, who appealed to their lust and vanity. Eve was deceived (2 Corinthians 11:3), and Adam lacked the moral courage to exercise leadership and stand for the right (Genesis 3:6–12). Ever since that momentous day in the Garden, humanity has again and again been plagued by a lack of moral courage and a gullible willingness to accept falsehood.

What is the source of the evil in the world in which we live?

The Bible plainly reveals the origin of the being who tempted our first parents and who continues to deceive mankind until this very day.

In Isaiah 14:12, we are told of a great created being named Lucifer (a Latin translation of the Hebrew Heylel, which means, “light bringer”).

Ezekiel 28 contains an account of the same being under the metaphor “king of Tyre.”
